Bank R.I. gives $2K<br> to housing group

PROVIDENCE – Bank Rhode Island has awarded a $2,000 grant to the West Elmwood Housing Development Corp. in support of revitalizing the neighborhood, which has fallen victim to some of the highest foreclosure rates in the region, according to a Dec. 31 news release from the bank.
The funding will be used to expand the housing organization’s Home Ownership Center counseling services, which include financial literacy and homebuyer education.
“We are pleased to fund the work of West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation and their efforts to improve a community that has been so adversely affected,” said BankRI President and CEO Mark J. Meiklejohn. “Thanks to the classes offered through their Home Ownership Center, many of our neighbors have access to the help and resources they need to realize their dream of purchasing a home.”
During the past two years, the West Elmwood Housing Development Corp. has helped 99 families buy their first home.
