BankFive honors food pantry volunteer

Posted 12/13/11

FALL RIVER – Rosemary Lackie wants to make sure everyone has enough food on their tables to feed their families, and she works tirelessly to do so in the Wareham community.

For those efforts, Lackie has been named BankFive and WSAR-AM 1480’s 166 Hometown Herione award winner.

Lackie has been volunteering for Family Food Pantry – Damien’s Place for more than 20 years. She also serves on the board of directors and is the volunteer coordinator for the organization.

The Family Food Pantry – Damien’s Place serves an average of 700 families per month, accounting for approximately 1,800 people. The pantry is open three days a week –Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – and is an agency of the United Way of Greater New Bedford.

When not volunteering with the pantry, Lackie also is part of a social group that gathers to knit and crochet at the Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham. The group makes afghans, hats, sweaters, and mittens which are donated to Turning Point and Baby Point for the homeless and needy.

“Knowing that I am helping those in the community with their most basic needs is something that makes me feel good and I will keep doing it as long as I am able,” Lackie said after receiving the award
