BankNewport and OceanPoint Insurance Agency helped to feed families in need this summer by donating $1,170 and more than 800 pounds of food to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
The monetary donation came from employees from BankNewport and OceanPoint during a program that allows employees to donate money in order to dress down on designated Fridays. The $1,170 will provide an additional 3,500 pounds of food to families in need, according to Andrew Schiff, CEO of the food bank.
The two organizations also held a Feed the Kids community food drive for two weeks this summer, where kid-friendly food items such as peanut butter, breakfast cereal and macaroni and cheese were donated at several locations around the state.
“Community-based efforts like these are what make it possible for us to keep up with the consistently high need for food assistance in Rhode Island,” said Schiff.
The food bank serves approximately 63,000 people every month through its food pantries statewide. One-third of those served are younger than 18. •
