WITH LIMITED ACCESS and cramped quarters, BankNewport is closing its Wellington Square, Newport, branch and moving operations to its existing Washington Square branch, starting in August.

NEWPORT – BankNewport has decided to consolidate operations of its Wellington Square and Washington Square branches into the 10 Washington Square location, effective Aug. 25.

Citing limited parking, one-way street access and cramped quarters, BankNewport President and CEO Sandra J. Pattie said in a statement that “our customer growth at that branch reflects those limitations.”

She added, “by moving our Wellington team to the larger Washington Square branch, we will be able to provide all Newport customers with familiar faces, easy accessibility to our offices, better drive-thru service, ample free parking, safe deposit boxes and Saturday banking hours.”

The bank said that the four employees of the Wellington branch will be re-assigned to other branches, including Washington Square. Saturday hours at the Washington Square branch are scheduled to begin on June 2.
