BankRI food drive nets 20 tons of food for pantries

Bank Rhode Island launched its annual food drive in each of its 19 branches throughout August and September, resulting in more than 40,000 pounds of food to benefit local pantries.
In addition to the collection, which also coincided with Hunger Action Month, BankRI also awarded each pantry with a financial grant to help stock shelves.
All benefiting pantries are associated with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which serves approximately 63,000 Rhode Islanders each year.
According to the USDA, one in seven Rhode Island households struggle to put food on the table.
“Too many people across our state – adults and children alike – are unsure where their next meal will come from,” said Mark J. Meiklejohn, president and CEO of BankRI. “Our annual food drive is an opportunity to help our neighbors; I’m extremely proud of how our customers and staff came together in support of such an important cause.” •
