PROVIDENCE – Bank Rhode Island announced today that it will be the presenting sponsor of the first annual Steven K. Latimer Memorial 5K, Families Against Violence Run/Walk to be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Roger Williams Park in Providence. Proceeds will go toward the Steven K. Latimer Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide educational scholarships to Rhode Island children who have lost a parent or parents due to an act of violence. Latimer lost his life in a drive-by shooting in October 2011

Participants may pre-register on or before Sept. 27. Pre-registration fees are $22/adult; $12/child 12 & under. Participants may also register the day of the event at a cost of $25/adult; $15/child 12 and younger. Event day registration will open at 8:30 a.m. followed by the run/walk at 10:00 a.m. T-shirts will be provided to the first 500 pre-registered participants. Prizes will be awarded to top performers of various age groups and teams. Free carousel rides and face painting will be provided from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

“Bank Rhode Island is proud to support our friend and colleague, Myra Latimer, with the establishment of the Steven K. Latimer Memorial Scholarship Fund. Steven’s death was the result of a senseless act of violence, but his life will be honored by providing educational opportunities to those children who have suffered the loss of a parent,” said Mark Meiklejohn, president & CEO of BankRI in a statement announcing the support.

“We want our children to know that violence is not the answer, to understand and value the importance of a good education, and to always choose peace in their long-term solution to violence. If my standing up and speaking out makes a difference in just one child’s life, then Steven’s death will not be in vain,” said Myra Latimer, founder of the Steven K. Latimer Memorial Scholarship Fund and BankRI employee.
