Thursday marks the 37th anniversary of the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, a day to encourage smokers to nix the habit. Since 1976, the event has called for smokers to commit to making a long-term plan to quit smoking for good. Tobacco use killed nearly 6 million people around the world in 2011, and an estimated 600,000 people die annually because of secondhand smoke. Smokers who wish to participate in the smokeout can visit the Society’s website for tips, tools and resources to help them quit smoking.
