WOONSOCKET – Beacon Charter High School for the Arts will begin offering instruction in grade six starting this fall at its new Founders Academy Middle School.
The amendment to Beacon’s charter was granted on Monday by the R.I. Board of Education.
Beacon, which opened in 2003, has served students in grades nine through twelve over the last 12 years. In the Department of Education’s most recent school classifications, Beacon achieved “commended status,” the highest possible ranking.
While the school made significant gains in achievement, its scores in mathematics did not show the same growth, particularly in the area of numbers and operations, skills typically taught prior to high school.
As a result, the school’s leadership team drafted a proposal to add middle school grades to Beacon to address core academic skills in all areas, but particularly in mathematics, reading and writing.
In addition, the new school will offer students the opportunity to experience the arts programs offered at Beacon. Upon successfully completing grade 8 at Founders Academy, students will be enrolled in grade 9 at Beacon.
Beacon CEO Michael Skeldon said seventh grade will be added in 2016, and eighth grade, in 2018.
Applications for grades 9-12 are due by Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. and the lottery will be held March 2.
An open house for Founders Academy will be held at Beacon on March 18 at 6 p.m. Applications for grade six are due by March 31 by 4 p.m. for inclusion in a special lottery to be held on April 1.
Applications are available at beaconart.org/.
