Best cities for families in R.I.? Cranston and Warwick

PROVIDENCE – Among Rhode Island cities, Cranston and Warwick are the best for raising a family, according to the ”Best Cities for Families” list released this week by ApartmentList.com.

Cranston ranked 99th, and Warwick was right behind at 100th. They both received grades of B+, according to the online rental marketplace.

Pawtucket came in at 156th with a B, and Providence, 368th, with a C.

In southeastern Massachusetts, Fall River ranked 282nd with a grade of B-, while New Bedford ranked 419th with a C.

Apartment List came up with its findings after creating a “family friendliness index” that looked at safety based on FBI data, housing affordability using U.S. Census data to calculate median gross rent as a percentage of household income, education quality based on high school graduation rates and the percentage of the population under 18.

Data for more than 500 cities was analyzed.

Based on the family friendliness index, Flower Mound, Texas, is the best city for families in the United States, followed by Frisco, Texas; Franklin, Tenn.; Carmel, Ind.; and Naperville, Ill. They all received A+ grades.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was last on the list with an F.
