PROVIDENCE – Startup accelerator Betaspring is putting a new twist on shopping local this holiday season.
Betaspring launched a holiday gift guide, promoting products from 10 startups that either worked with Betaspring or the Founders League, which is a shared workspace for companies and entrepreneurs.
There are Manpacks, billed as “gifts guys love,” featuring shaving kits, soap packages and sock assortments, and more, as well as Surprise Ride, a monthly adventure-in-a-box for children that is sent by mail, along with jewelry from Haverhill, college care packages from PijonBox, and Jerry the Bear, a stuffed bear that helps children learn about their health.
O-rings, toys that are designed for inclusive play by Increment; Quibit, which helps people quit smoking through a “smart” lighter; wireless 3D printing from AstroPrint; custom apparel for men from Acustom Apparel; and Tablet Couture’s digital frame for iPads and iPhones, are featured on Betaspring’s startup gift guide.
Melissa Withers, managing director of Betaspring, said she was “partly inspired by the shop local” movement and various holiday gift guides to create one of her own.
“It’s a fun twist,” Withers said recently. “You can give a great gift and build entrepreneurial dreams. You can’t do that on Amazon.”
In the week that the promotion has been out, Withers said the response has been positive, and purchases are being made.
“It’s had the effect we were looking for,” she said.
Each startup has a promotion associated with it, which shoppers can take advantage of by using a special gift code from Betaspring. Discounts, free shipping and gift cards are some of the deals being promoted.
