Big Brothers Big Sisters honors mentors for work

“MY MOM was very strict. [I] didn’t have a ‘normal childhood’ filled with normal traditions such as dying Easter eggs, carving pumpkins or going Christmas caroling,” said Big Sister of the Year Julie Lefebvre, left, who now shares these experiences with her mentee, Alexis.

Big Brothers Big Sisters recently announced that two Rhode Island residents have been named Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year in recognition of their work with youth mentees.
The recipients of this honor are Julie Lefebvre, who will be celebrating four years together with her “little sister” Alexis, and David Bell, who has been matched with his “little brother” Bradley for more than two and a half years.
The requirements to be recognized nationally by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America are to be matched with a mentee for a minimum of two years. An essay must be submitted by the volunteer to their match support specialist and evaluated internally by staff and committee members.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that increase high school graduation rates among participants as well as raise their self-confidence while decreasing their likelihood to engage in risky behaviors. •
