Big Brothers Big Sisters kicks off yearlong recruitment

WARWICK – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State is kicking off a yearlong recruitment effort to pair mentors with more than 200 youth on Jan. 14.
The free event, presented by UnitedHealthcare, is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the public library at 600 Sandy Lane. The youth hoping to be paired with mentors are on a waiting list in Rhode Island.
Stephen Farrell, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, will provide the welcome, while Rachelle Green, president of the board of directors of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State, will announce the nonprofit’s locally recognized, nationally nominated Big Brother and Big Sister of 2015. Green also is a partner at Duffy & Sweeney, Ltd.
A panel discussion about the impact of mentoring will include Deborah Gist, the state’s commissioner of elementary and secondary education; Deborah Saunders, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State’s executive director; JoAnne Schofield, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership; Lauren Conway, a “big sister” and CFO for UnitedHealthcare of New England; Pilar McCloud, spokesperson for the Rhode Island chapter of the NAACP, and “big brother” Russell Fry.
Those in attendance will be entered to win a FITBIT courtesy of UnitedHealthcare.
