Bike-a-thon raises $65K

PROVIDENCE – The bulk of the $65,000 raised in Lifecycle Inc.’s sixth annual Ride ’Round Rhody 2014 bike-a-thon this past summer is being donated to the Lifespan Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
The bike-a-thon, which took place Aug. 10, raised more than $65,000 for local cancer treatment and research.
Once the funding was tallied, Lifecycle co-founders, Dani and Jacob Brier, along with participants and volunteers, presented a check of $50,035 to Dr. Fred Schiffman at The Miriam Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“We are thrilled to support the efforts of Lifespan in treating local cancer patients in new and innovative ways,” said Dani Brier, Lifecycle Inc. co-founder and vice chairwoman. “None of this would be possible without our dedicated cyclists, volunteers, and sponsors. We are extremely grateful for the community’s assistance in advancing Lifecycle’s mission.”
This year, the funds will support personalized cancer treatment initiatives across Lifespan hospitals, including genomic cancer care and alternative medicines such as Reiki therapy.
Other grant recipients from the fund-raising include Women & Infants’ Hospital, for its new minimally invasive surgical care suite; and Shri Service Corps, to provide yoga therapy to oncology patients and staff of local cancer centers.
More than a hundred cyclists and volunteers converged on Bryant University’s campus for the all-day, family-friendly event, which included 25- or 75-mile courses. Cyclists paid a registration fee and raised a minimum of $250. Many cyclists raised upwards of $1,000 for the cause.
