PROVIDENCE – A new provision in state housing law is aimed at protecting veterans or current members of the Armed Forces or the Rhode Island National Guard, who could be deployed.
The amendment to the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act will add military status discrimination as an unlawful housing practice.
The provision prohibits sellers or landlords from asking questions about military status, for applicants trying to rent an apartment, or purchase or lease a house.
It was sponsored by state Sen. Walter S. Felag Jr., D-Warren, and state Rep. Jan P. Malik, D-Warren.
