Block Island Ferry offers new high-speed Newport trips

NARRAGANSETT – The Block Island Ferry will offer a new line of high-speed transport between Newport and Block Island starting Saturday, June 29, the ferry announced Monday.

The roughly 70-minute trip will replace the ferry service’s previous two-hour line of transport to and from Block Island. Newport passengers will now travel on the high-speed M/V Islander, an aluminum catamaran ferry.

Previously, all trips departed from and arrived at Fort Adams and ran at a traditional speed, but the new ferry will depart downtown Newport’s Perotti Park.

The ferry service also runs to and from Point Judith, a passage that comprises both traditional and high-speed ferry options.

Running through Sept. 2, the seasonal Newport-Block Island ferry will depart downtown Newport’s Perotti Park every 9 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., making the return trip from Block Island’s Old Harbor at 10:30 a.m. and 5:05 p.m. Previously, the ferry ran only once a day.

The new schedule will allow passengers traveling from Block Island to spend an afternoon in Newport and return the same day, Megan Moran, the ferry’s director of group sales, told Providence Business News.

Round-trip fares will be $50.50 for adults and $26 for children.

The M/V Islander, which the ferry service bought last summer and has since renovated, will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Friday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Perotti Park, 39 America’s Cup Ave., Newport.
