FALL RIVER – Blount Fine Foods announced Thursday the acquisition of Cape Cod Chowder Company of Marion, Mass., without disclosing the terms.

“We’ve been in a moderate-pace transition from 20 years ago primarily seafood to today, being primarily prepared foods with a seafood focus,” President Todd Blount told Providence Business News, noting that the company now sells only prepared food.

The company purchased a Florida-based soup and dip maker, Neco Foods LLC, in August and divested its clam business earlier this year.

“These two acquisitions effectively brought in more sales than what we divested. From a net basis, we are growing as a company as though we never divested any of our businesses and keeps us on track with our typical 10 to 25 percent growth per year,” he said.

Blount said it plans to move soup production of the Cape Cod Chowder brand to its newly upgraded plant in Warren. The Warren facility, which had a second production line built during the upgrade, ran its first batch of the bulk-size chowders and soup in mid-November.

“[Cape Cod] is just a perfect fit,” said Blount. “They have a ton of high-end restaurants in Rhode Island and two national accounts.”

Cape Cod’s seafood dip and spread lines – sold as Offshore Delight - will moved to the Fall River facility.

Cape Cod products will still be marketed under the same brand, and Blount said it has no plans for immediate changes to its products or customer service, except where the company finds efficiencies. Employees will be offered positions at Blount.

When speaking about the similarities between the two companies’ products, Blount said: “When we actually looked at [both of our recipes] it’s like lost cousins finally meeting together again.”

“We had no idea we were so similar,” he added.

Cape Cod’s product will continue to be sold and delivered through its affiliate Sea Horse Seafood Distribution.

Cape Cod has about 10 employees; Blount has about 250 employees, 100 seasonal workers, as well as another 50 in Florida.
