The Rhode Island Free Clinic was recently presented with a $50,000 donation to expand its Physician Network program by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. The Physician Network is a volunteer initiative in which health care providers donate time to provide care to the uninsured.
“The work that RIFC does in our community is critical to improving access to health care for the uninsured,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO of Blue Cross & Blue Shield Rhode Island. “We are grateful for the fantastic work RIFC does in our community.”
The Free Clinic currently has 163 primary and specialty-care provider volunteers at its clinic and 165 in its Physician Network. Founded in 1999, the clinic logged nearly 6,000 patient visits in 2010. Among RIFC’s providers is Dr. Gus Manocchia BCBSRI’s senior vice president and chief medical officer, who keeps regular patient hours at the clinic. In addition, Mark Waggoner, BCBSRI network-services senior vice president, serves on the RIFC board of directors. •
