NEW YORK – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s BlueSolutions for HAS Direct Plan 5000/10000 plan was the only insurance plan in Rhode Island to earn five stars on U.S. News & World Report’s list of the Best Health Insurance Plans.
U.S. News ranked health insurance plans offered by state for those individuals not covered by an employer or government plan.
In the Ocean State, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the only provider of plans for individuals to purchase. It is known as the Direct Pay program and there are currently about 15,000 users enrolled.
Blue Cross’s BlueSolutions 5000/10000 plan earned five stars from U.S. News & World Report for both the family plan and the individual plans. U.S News rated the monthly payment as “low” for both plans.
On the family plan, there is a $10,000 deductible and a $12,100 out-of-pocket limit. For the individual plan, there is a $5,000 deductible and a $6,050 out-of-pocket limit.
U.S. News & World Report scored plans based on the completeness of coverage in as many as two dozen benefit categories and subcategories, including hospitalization, outpatient surgery, name-brand prescription drugs and emergency room visits, as well as how much of the cost consumers have to pay.
Blue Cross had three different individual insurance plans ranked with four stars: BlueSolutions for HAS Direct Plan 3000/6000, VantageBlue Direct Plan 1000/2000 and VantageBlue Direct Plan 1500/3000.
Four family insurance plans merited four stars: BlueSolutions for HAS Direct Plan 3000/6000, VantageBlue Direct Plan 1000/2000, VantageBlue Direct Plan 1500/3000 and HealthMate Coast-to-Coast Direct Plan 2500/5000.
None of Blue Cross’s family plans ranked below four stars, though the insurer had two individual plans ranked at three stars: BlueValue Direct Plan 2500 and HealthMate Coast-to-Coast DirectPlan 2500/5000.
In Massachusetts, 49 individual and 51 family insurance plans rated five stars. The Bay State had the highest percentage of well-ranked plans, with all 67 plans available to individuals receiving either four or five stars.
