Blue Cross volunteers hit playground

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island volunteers recently built a new playground at Mary E. Fogarty Elementary School as part of “Blue across Rhode Island,” the company’s signature volunteer event.
The playground project at 199 Oxford Street is part of non-profit Family Service of Rhode Island’s “Providence Children’s Initiative,” which is based at the school. The initiative, which includes the “Walking School Bus” program, aims to improve academic, economic and social outcomes in Providence’s South Side neighborhood.
The work comes with a $5,000 grant from the company to purchase supplies and offset other expenses.
“Seeing the children’s faces as they saw the playground for the first time was so rewarding and I can’t wait to see them utilize it,” said Family Service of Rhode Island’s Julie Casimiro, who heads the Providence Children’s Initiative. “Whenever the children saw a BCBSRI volunteer walking around, they would say ‘Thank you.’ ”
