PROVIDENCE – Schools in Rhode Island are eligible to compete with schools in 11 other states for a $25,000 cultural arts grant to be awarded by Bob’s Discount Furniture of Manchester, Conn.
The store launched its 10th Annual Celebrate the Arts Contest on Oct. 1 and schools have until Oct. 31 to enter to win the grant to support their arts programs. The other states in which the stores are located and the schools are eligible to compete are Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In anticipation of its Chicago store openings in early 2016, Bob’s Discount Furniture has opened this year’s contest to Illinois schools, as well.
The contest aims to generate awareness and support of fine arts and cultural programs to help maintain visual, creative, and performing arts in schools.
To enter, K-12 schools fill out a form through the Bob’s Discount Furniture website: mybobs.com/celebrate-the-arts. The contest is open to K-12 schools located in the states where Bob’s is located.
“Too often, arts programs are the first to feel the effects of budget cuts,” said Cathy Poulin, public relations director and spokeswoman for Bob’s Discount Furniture. “When we created this contest, our goal was to not only help combat these program cuts, but to provide the resources needed to enhance the programs.”
An outreach team will randomly select one school on Nov. 10 to receive the $25,000 grant to use during the 2015-16 school year.
The store developed the contest in 2006 after noticing the elimination of fine arts and cultural programs in schools following budget cuts. Since the contest began, Bob’s has awarded more than $325,000 to schools in states where it is located.
