PROVIDENCE – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza has appointed Army Col. Michael Borg as director of the Providence Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security.
Borg is currently a senior adviser to the U.S. Naval War College in Newport and principal adviser to the college president.
Previously, he was involved with NATO training operations in Afghanistan.
“Colonel Borg is a proven leader who has experience managing cutting-edge crisis response operations,” Elorza said in a statement. “I am excited to welcome such a qualified and capable individual into this critical role.”
As PEMA director, Borg will oversee coordination and integration of all activities necessary to build, sustain and improve the capability to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters.
Former PEMA Director Col. Peter Gaynor, who led the agency for seven years, will head the R.I. Emergency Management Agency.
