PROVIDENCE – The Boston Sports Club, a health club at the corner of Dorrance and Westminster streets in downtown Providence, is closing, the general manager confirmed Friday.
General Manager Rebecca Goodier referred all other comment to the owner, New York-based Town Sports International Holdings Inc., whose director of public relations, Lisa Hufcut, could not be reached to elaborate on when the club is closing, membership numbers and other details.
No one could be reached for comment on whether the Boston Sports Club on Pitman Street in the city’s East Side would be closing or remain open.

In reporting second-quarter results on July 30, however, Robert Giardina, the company CEO, had stated that nine clubs would close, not specifying which ones. He also said a “strategic shift” in business would involved converting at least 20 clubs this year to “a high-value, low-price model” believed to have the capacity to compete with suburban markets, according to a press release on the company website.
According to second-quarter financial results, TSI reported overall decreases in membership of 8,000, from 456,000 to 488,000, and average monthly member attrition of 3.4 percent. Revenue decreased 3.7 percent in the second quarter.
TSI does business as a sports clubs network that includes 150 clubs in the New York, Boston, Washington, and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
