Boy Scouts council honors two

The Narragansett Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently recognized two community leaders for upholding values that epitomize those of scouting.
Honored were Armand E. Sabitoni, general secretary-treasurer and New England regional manager of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, and Dennis D. Keefe, the president and CEO of the Care New England Healthcare System.
The Annual Distinguished Citizens Award Luncheon was held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.
“This year’s recipients are well-deserving,” said John Mosby, Narragansett Council’s Scout executive and CEO. “Through their efforts to help our community, both [men] have served as great role models for our youth.”
The award is named in honor of the late Sen. John H. Chafee, a Scout and Narragansett Council alumnus.
One of Sabitoni’s achievements is the founding of the New England Laborers’/Cranston Public Schools Construction & Career Academy. The charter school in Cranston offers courses on construction.
Keefe has worked with Care New England since August of 2011. With revenues of $1 billion a year, the healthcare system includes Butler, Women & Infants, Kent and Memorial hospitals.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Narragansett Council’s Urban Scouting Program, helping nearly 1,000 at-risk youth enrolled in Scouting. Funds will be used to pay staff to serve as Cubmasters and Scoutmasters, and cover uniforms, registration and summer camp scholarships.
The Narragansett Council offers a program for boys and young men ages 6 to 21 and young women ages 14 to 21. The council serves nearly 14,000 in Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts, and Pawcatuck, Conn.
