Boys & Girls Club breaks ground on addition

PAWTUCKET – Teens and youth helped break ground for a renovated clubhouse and addition for the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket on March 14. The ceremony took place at the Alfred Elson Jr. Clubhouse at One Moeller Place.
James Hoyt, club CEO, opened the ceremony saying, “If I seem a little bit enthusiastic and excited it is because we are making history here today. We have been really long in planning this project …. This building will have a new teen center, visual arts and performance spaces, a new gymnasium, and renovations throughout the existing building.”
The project began in 2011 with an ongoing $8 million campaign and will usher in the many facility improvements once the 18,000-square-foot addition and existing clubhouse renovations are fully ready later this year, speakers said. It is scheduled to be complete in January.
The expansion and renovations will allow the club to offer enhanced programs to better meet its three goals: for members to attain academic success, build good character and live healthy lives – the priorities of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
While the clubhouse undergoes renovations, club programs and activities will remain at the Elson House for the remainder of this school year. The club is working to complete plans for off-site program delivery. Most summer activities will take place at Camp Ramsbottom, the club’s summer day camp in Rehoboth, Mass., with baseball continuing at the club.
The Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket serves 4,000 youth from Pawtucket and Central Falls. It was founded in 1900.
