PROVIDENCE – Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University have signed an affiliation agreement that establishes Home & Hospice Care as the major teaching affiliate for hospice and palliative medicine for the school, the organizations announced Wednesday.

Under the agreement, both parties will share responsibility for creating a learning environment in end-of-life care for Alpert Medical School students and residents.

Home & Hospice Care will administer all clinical services and patient care, while the Alpert Medical School will be responsible for academic programs, research and the education of students and residents.

“This agreement between such a prominent, renowned medical school and a national hospice leader underscores the growing emergence of hospice and palliative care into mainstream medicine,” Diana Franchitto, Home & Hospice Care president and CEO, said in prepared remarks.

“Home & Hospice Care is well known for providing skillful and compassionate care. We are pleased this agreement formalizes our long-standing relationship with them and commitment to ensure that Alpert Medical School students have been trained in the specialized and unique care of patients and their families in the last months and weeks of life,” said Dr. Edward J. Wing, dean of medicine and biological Sciences at Brown University.

Dr. Edward W. Martin, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School and Chief Medical Officer for Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, will oversee the clinical training of medical students and doctors at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center in Providence.

Martin, along with all other associate medical directors from HHCRI, has an academic appointment with Brown and is certified in the subspecialty of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

“This alliance will bring great value to the community, to the seriously ill and to the next generation of physicians,” said Martin. “It is built upon a mutual commitment to the study and practice of hospice and palliative care. The academic component will generate new ideas, new techniques and up-to-date research that will clearly benefit hospice patients.”
