Brown, Coursera partner on free noncredit courses

PROVIDENCE – Brown University will begin offering free online, noncredit courses beginning next summer in a partnership with Coursera, Stanford University’s faculty-founded platform. The latter launched last summer and now has 32 participating domestic and international universities.
“I am personally excited to see how this act of opening our classrooms to a wider audience will help us rethink how we are teaching at home, “ said Katherine Bergeron, dean of the College at Brown, in a statement.
A Brown University statement said the move is a chance to explore online learning, including on how it could enhance the undergraduate education.
Three Brown University faculty members will offer an initial round of classes in comparative literature, archaeology and computer science.
Brown also next summer will make available a small number of its most popular 2013 summer session offerings online for a fee. •
