Brown No. 106 in U.S. News’ ranking for academics, research

WASHINGTON – Brown University is ranked 106th among the world’s top 500 universities, according to a list released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings are produced annually to provide insight into how universities compare with other schools around the world academically and in terms of research, according to the magazine’s website.

The top three on the list are Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Berkeley.

The publication started with 750 schools to produce the top 500. Eligibility for that pool started with the top 200 universities in the results of Thomson Reuters’ global reputation survey. Next the list included those schools with the most faculty article publications during the most recent five years.

In addition, the methodology involves 10 indicators and weights used to measure global research performance.

Brown earned a global score of 56, global research reputation of rank of 92, and a regional research reputation of rank 133. The university ranked 176th for publications, 121st for citations, and 129th for highly cited papers, according to the website.

Brown’s subject rankings included: 47th in mathematics; 56th in social sciences and public health; and 61st in psychiatry/psychology.

Top-ranked Harvard earned a global score of 100, and ranked first in global research reputation, publications, number of highly cited papers and total citations.
