Brown, RISD, Wheaton recognized as top-producing institutions for Fulbright scholars

PROVIDENCE – Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and Wheaton College were recognized as top-producing institutions for Fulbright scholars in an annual list from the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Of Brown’s 96 applicants, 18 received awards. Brown was in the research institution category.
RISD, which was in the specialized institution category, had 14 applicants and three awards.
According to information from RISD, this was the fourth year in a row that it was named a “top producer” in the annual list of colleges and universities with the most Fulbright scholars studying abroad.
The three RISD students who won awards are: Sophie Barbasch, who has been photographing the Transnordestina railroad in Brazil; Lindsay Carone, a sculptor exploring traditional craft using modern trash in India; and Alexander McCargar, who is researching Vienna’s opera tradition in Austria.
Wheaton College, in Norton, in the bachelor’s institutions category, had 26 applicants and 10 awards.
According to the Fulbright program, other local universities that had Fulbright scholars in 2015-2016 were:

  • Stonehill College in Easton, five applicants and one award
  • Providence College, seven applicants and two awards
  • Roger Williams University in Bristol, two applications and one award
  • University of Rhode Island, eight applicants and one award

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. It is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participant, chosen for academic merit and leadership potential, with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
