CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University ranked 28th on a list of the top 100 social media colleges by StudentAdvisor.com.

“Social media has revolutionized university engagement,” Dean Tsouvalas, editor-in-chief of StudentAdvisor.com, said in a press release.

“The schools on our list do an incredible job of harnessing the power of social media to keep their own communities informed and show the world what they are all about,” added Tsouvalas.

“Tracking down all of Brown’s social media profiles is a breeze with Social@Brown,” said the StudentAdvisor report, adding that the university has a chart comparing attributes like photo uploads and text update capabilities on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, iTunesU and LinkedIn.

The Rhode Island School of Design ranked 48th in the lists’s Spring 2012 iteration.

According to the website, RISD’s President John Maeda has led an “experimental leadership method in social media, tweeting more than any college president.” Maeda also blogs and posts videos to YouTube.

“Social media has revolutionized how colleges communicate,” said Tsouvalas on the website. “These are the ones to watch.”

StudentAdvisor.com ranked colleges on more than 100,000 data points, tracking total Facebook fan counts, number and effectiveness of Twitter followers, school enrollment and various other factors, according to the release.

Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and University of Notre Dame took the top three spots on the education information website’s semi-annual list.
