Brown, U.S. Naval War College continue partnership

PROVIDENCE – Brown University and the U.S. Naval War College are continuing to strengthen the partnership they formed more than a year ago, The Brown Daily Herald reported recently.
Over the past year, Brown and the Naval War College have hosted panels and lectures concerning national security and cybersecurity issues, and a working group is exploring other potential collaborations.
In addition, visiting scholars from the Naval War College are currently in residence at Brown, researching international relations issues at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. Brown does not have any faculty at the War College, according to the article.
War College professors told The Brown Daily Herald that one of the goals of the partnership is to bridge the “civil-military gap.”
According to a news release from Brown issued in June 2014, an agreement was signed to promote collaborative research and teaching between Brown and the U.S. Naval War College that will address challenges to international security.
At the time, Brown University President Christina H. Paxson said, “Together, Brown’s Watson Institute for International Studies and the Naval War College will focus on solutions to contemporary security challenges such as cybersecurity, nonproliferation and environmental change.”
Rear Admiral Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr., former president of the Naval War College, said the partnership with the Watson Institute will “help to build a better future for tomorrow by enabling the Naval War College to leverage the academic expertise of the Watson Institute with answering some of these very challenging problems that face our world today.”
Agreement components also included an annual distinguished lecture series and creation of national security fellowships for affiliation and visiting status at each institution.
