PROVIDENCE - Brown University has awarded $50,000 to three city schools from the Fund for the Education of the Children of Providence. The grants are the last the university will give directly to schools from the fund.

Inspiring Minds will receive $20,000 for its Intensive Intervention Initiative. The partner program with Asa Messer Elementary School is designed to help students in pre-kindergarten through third grade become proficient in reading and math.

The Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program (UCAP) was awarded $20,000 to purchase computers and equipment.

Sophia Academy was awarded $10,000 for its Girl Tech - Technology in Action program.

Created in 2007, the fund is an endowment established in response to recommendations from the University’s Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice.

The university in an Aug. 9 news release said it has raised $1,550,500 and awarded nearly $300,000 to 11 elementary, middle and high schools, the district and a nonprofit organization working in an elementary school.

Brown has said the fund in the future will be used to support scholarships for Providence public high school graduates accepted to accredited two- or four-year colleges.

Earlier this year 20 one-time scholarships of $2,500 were awarded for the 2013-14 academic year, with at least one scholarship awarded in each Providence public high school.
