PROVIDENCE – Brown University has granted four Providence schools a total of $50,237 from its Fund for the Education of Children of Providence, an initiative to aid local public schools.

The fund, inspired by the Report of the University’s Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, aims to raise a $10 million endowment managed by the Corporation of Brown University.

Brown granted the following funds: $20,000 to Asa Messer Elementary School to partner with Inspiring Minds, a nonprofit, volunteer tutoring organization to improve literacy skills; $18,000 to Urban Collective Accelerated Program to purchase 16 iMac computers with wireless input that will allow the school to place two computers in each classroom and allow students to develop necessary computer-presentation skills; $11,250 to Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts to purchase film equipment, musical instruments, and software, dance supplies, and theater materials to support the school’s arts-integrated education model; and $1,000 to Charles Fortes Elementary School to enhance the school’s health curriculum by incorporating a research-based, social-emotional skills program that also is designed to prevent violence.

The Fund for the Education of the Children of Providence works to achieve significant, long-term, sustainable impact on the intellectual and social growth of Providence youth. •
