PROVIDENCE – The Princeton Review has named Brown University to its 2014 list of the 150 Best Value Colleges in the United States.

The Princeton Review, a New York-based education services company that is not affiliated with Princeton University, selected the schools from among 650 colleges throughout the country based on “excellent academics, generous financial aid and cost of attendance.”

Brown, which according to The Princeton Review offers an average freshman-year grant of $38,050 to help students pay the $42,808 annual tuition, was the only university from Rhode Island to make the 2014 list. Brown currently enrolls about 6,133 undergraduates, and its graduates carry an average debt of $23,521, The Princeton Review said.

“College-bound students and their families are understandably scared about paying for college, but a lot of people never make it past the sticker price,” said Robert Franek, senior vice president of The Princeton Review. “It’s such an avoidable mistake.”

The total annual cost of attendance – including tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies – averaged $19,500 for freshmen attending public universities among the 150 Best Value Colleges, and $54,200 for those attending private schools. When freshman grants, including state, federal and institutional aid, are factored into the cost, The Princeton Review said, the final tab drops to $10,600 at public universities and $21,700 at private universities.

The top three public schools on the 2014 list were the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, New College of Florida and the University of Virginia. The top private schools were Williams College, Harvard College and Swarthmore College.
