Brown professor studies nuclear-waste disposal

PROVIDENCE – Brad Marston, professor of physics at Brown University, will use a $75,000 grant from the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative for research on nuclear-waste disposal.
Marston’s theoretical research will involve developing predictive models needed to ensure the safe, long-term disposal of spent nuclear-fuel rods. Rods are typically stored at nuclear reactors around the country in dry cask storage or spent-fuel pools, but there is no long-term national repository. Overcoming the issue of how best to dispose of nuclear waste could advance the use of nuclear power, which some climate scientists regard as a way to provide energy while reducing carbon emissions. •
