PROVIDENCE – Brown University ranked No. 26 out of 50 in a faculty salary survey released by The Chronicle of Higher Education, with full professors receiving an average salary of $164,700. Including benefits, average compensation at Brown is $205,700.
The survey, for 2013 to 2014, ranked Columbia University in New York in the stop spot, with full professors there earning an average salary of $215,500. Stanford University placed second, with $215,200 as the average salary.
The University of Chicago, Harvard University and Princeton University rounded out the top five, with salaries of $210,700; $207,100 and $206,200, respectively.
As for other Rhode Island institutions of higher education, Bryant University ranked No. 43 with an average salary of $148,200.
Roger Williams University pays an average of $115,700; Providence College, $109,100; University of Rhode Island, $105,600; Salve Regina University, $93,900; Rhode Island College, $78,000; and Community College of Rhode Island, $74,800.
In Bristol County, Mass., the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth reported an average salary of $119,800, while Wheaton College’s average was $103,700.
According to the Chronicle, faculty salaries on average rose faster than inflation for the first time in five years. Salary data was collected by the American Association of University Professors and represents 2013 to 2014. A total of 1,157 institutions submitted data. The figures reflect average earnings of full-time instructional and research staff members; salary averages do not include medical school faculty or part-time faculty.
