PROVIDENCE – Brown University has signed a general agreement with Nanjing University in China to strengthen future collaborations, specifically undergraduate, graduate and faculty exchanges.

Brown President Ruth J. Simmons and Chancellor Yingxing Hong of Nanjing University signed the agreement Dec. 6, when Hong and a delegation from his university visited Brown. Hong met with Brown representatives to discuss the agreement and he delivered a lecture co-hosted by the Watson Institute, the Year of China, Rhodes Center and the Brown Department of Economics. The lecture was entitled, “Innovative Development of China’s Future Economy,” according to the Nanjing University website (www.nju.edu)

Brown and Nanjing have two exchange agreements in place: Brown Global Forums, a short-term faculty exchange, and the Nanjing-Brown Joint Program in Gender Studies, a research partnership among the Pembroke Center, the Brown Department of East Asian Studies and the Cogut Center at Brown with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Science at Nanjing.

Nanjing is considered one of the top universities in China with three campuses and a student body of 43,477 undergraduate and graduate students. •
