PROVIDENCE – Brown University has chosen Shawmut Design and Construction to renovate three campus dormitories, the Davol Square Providence construction management firm announced Wednesday.

The project includes “top-to-bottom” renovations of Metcalf and Miller Halls and “extensive” renovations of Andrews Hall. All three buildings are located on Lloyd Avenue in Providence.

The dorms in Metcalf and Miller will be converted into double occupancy bedrooms, while at Andrews many of the one, two, and three-student bedrooms will be converted into double-occupancy rooms.

The exteriors of each of the buildings will be restored, while a connection between Metcalf and Miller to Andrews will be demolished, creating three independent buildings.

At Andrews, kitchen and closet space on each floor will be combined to create a student lounge.

Shawmut is working with CBT Architects of Boston on the project, which is scheduled to begin in June 2012 and to be completed by December 2012.
