PROVIDENCE – Brown University will inaugurate Christina H. Paxson as its 19th president in a ceremony on the College Green at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with a reception to follow.
“Brown has had just 19 presidents in the nearly 250 years since its founding,” Brown Chancellor Thomas J. Tisch said in prepared remarks. “Given Brown’s mission and commitment to contributing in meaningful ways through teaching, research and service, this is an important moment not only for the campus community but for communities beyond College Hill.”
“We look forward to welcoming neighbors, partners and friends from Providence, Rhode Island, the nation and the world to join us to acknowledge and celebrate this milestone,” added Tisch.
Paxson, whose selection as president was announced March 2, was sworn in during a small, private ceremony on July 2.
The public inauguration ceremony includes the formal presentation of Brown’s presidential symbols: the president’s robe, the president’s chain, the Manning chair and a tin box, which holds a copy of the university charter.
Saturday’s inauguration ceremony is part of a two-day celebration beginning on Friday with an event in the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
The celebration will include public performances from Brown University artists as well as those from the local community. Artistic direction is being provided by the Trinity Repertory Co. and Brown/Trinity Masters of Fine Arts students.
Brown alumna and acclaimed actress Kate Burton will serve as the evening’s host. Admission to the event is free, but tickets are required.
