PROVIDENCE – An advisory committee has recommended that Brown University stop investing in HEI Hotels and Resorts because of concerns about labor-rights violations.
The Brown University Advisory Committee on Corporate Responsibility in Investment Policy recommendation was sent to Brown President Ruth Simmons last month.
In March 2010, Simmons sent a letter to HEI expressing concerns over allegations that the company violated labor laws.
The advisory committee recently noted that HEI has not been found guilty of any violations of the National Labor Relations Act, but said a pattern of allegations that the company treats workers poorly and interferes with unionization efforts led to the recommendation.
Responding to Simmons’ letter last year, HEI argued that the allegations were unjustified. •
