Brown wins share of $6.8M ex-inmate suicide prevention grant

PROVIDENCE – Brown University and Michigan State researchers recently won a $6.8 million federal grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to test an intervention designed to prevent suicide among individuals transitioning from prison.

The Brown part of the Suicide Prevention for at-Risk Individuals in Transition, or SPIRIT, team will enroll inmates as they leave the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston. The Brown and Michigan State groups together plan to enroll 800 former inmates.

Participants in the study will either be provided with standard care or assigned to the Safety Planning Intervention. Suicide risk is elevated among ex-inmates returning home.
