Bryant kicks-off 150th anniversary celebration

SMITHFIELD – Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley was joined by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee as well as local leaders, members of the Bryant board of trustees, students, faculty and staff to kick-off the school’s 150th anniversary celebration on Friday.

The sesquicentennial launch event, which took place from 12:30 to 1 p.m. in the Koffler Rotunda, included the unveiling of the school’s 150th anniversary logo and historic photos, as well as speeches from the governor and other guests, including U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline.

More than 500 people were on hand for the event. Machtley noted that Bryant is the third-oldest university in the Ocean State (behind Brown University and Rhode Island College) and one of only 178 higher education institutions in the United States that is 150 years or older.

Bryant plans to celebrate its 150th anniversary all year long and announced a series of events at the kick-off.

Bryant, which was founded in 1863, has roughly 3,400 undergraduate students from 27 states and 54 countries.
