SMITHFIELD – Bryant University has named Glenn M. Sulmasy, a U.S. Coast Guard Academy captain, as its first provost and chief academic officer, effective this March.
Sulmasy is the New London, Conn.,-based Coast Guard Academy’s chairman and dean of the Department of Humanities, as well as a professor of law. Bryant President Ronald K. Machtley announced the hiring Wednesday afternoon following completion of a nationwide search.
As the new provost, Sulmasy will be responsible for all academic and research programs within the university’s College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, and its School of Health Sciences. He also joins an executive leadership team charged with implementing the university’s Vision 20/20 strategic plan, Machtley said in a press release.
“To define our future and set the pace for others to follow, we must be bold in advancing our mission, creating a new model for educating innovative leaders with character who will make a difference around the world,” said Machtley. “Sulmasy’s exceptional background, distinguished reputation, demonstrated leadership abilities, and international perspective will accelerate Bryant’s trajectory of excellence.”
Sumasy welcomed the opportunity to join Bryant’s senior leadership team and said he’d help “cultivate in Bryant students the qualities of character vital for leadership and essential to the health of a democratic society.”
In his role at the academy, Sulmasy has overseen a “multi-year overhaul” of the government major, ensuring it is on par with the best comparable programs in the nation. He also has launched and overseen new, interdisciplinary centers focused on the Arctic as well as in the growing field of cyber policy and law.
Sulmasy earned his bachelor’s degree in government from the academy, and a juris doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He also holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of California Berkeley School of Law. He will resign his post as captain at the academy in order to take the Bryant provost’s position, the university said.
