Burrillville lawmakers oppose power plant

BURRILLVILLE – Two state lawmakers representing the town say they will oppose Invenergy Thermal Development LLC’s application to construct a 1000-megawatt, gas-fired power plant in Pascoag village.

Sen. Paul Fogarty and Rep. Cale Keable, both Democrats, noted their opposition in an April 7 letter to the state’s Energy Facility Siting Board, which is holding public hearings on the proposal.

“Burrillville already hosts a fossil-fuel-burning power plant and has done so for over two decades,” the lawmakers said in their letter. “Siting a second power plant in the same town does not comport with any rational notion of fairness. More importantly, having two power plants within five miles of one another raises serious concerns regarding cumulative, negative health effects.”

Opponents of the proposed $700 million Clear River Energy Center have also complained about the disruption of their solitude in the heavily wooded community.
