Butler Hospital creates foundation for support

Posted 3/12/12

PROVIDENCE – Butler Hospital, the state’s only private, nonprofit psychiatric and substance-abuse hospital serving adults, adolescents and children, has created its own foundation to further the hospital’s mission by provided philanthropic support.

In addition, foundation members will serve as ambassadors for the hospital, increasing support and understanding of mental health and illnesses that touch one out of every four people in the community.

“The foundation will reach out to the community to garner support of its work as a leader in brain science research, teaching and developing innovative treatment,” said Butler President and CEO Dr. Patricia R. Recupero.

Through the foundation, donors may support the hospital’s general fund needs or tailor their gift to special funds used to support a range of needs, from purchasing new playground equipment for the child and adolescent programs to researching ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

“Cutting-edge research is being conducted at Butler by world-renowned researchers who are on the cusp of making the discoveries that will change the outcome for people with brain disorders like Alzheimer’s,” said Allen Cicchitelli, chairman of the Butler Hospital Foundation Board.

Initial fundraising efforts will focus in part on the creation of the hospital’s first endowed chair, the Stanley M. Aronson Endowed Chair for Movement Disorders, named for Dr. Stanley Aronson, who was the founding dean of Brown University’s medical school.
