WARWICK – Lori Velino, a guidance counselor at the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center, has won the 2012 SkillsUSA Rhode Island Advisor of the Year Award.
Rep. James R. Langevin, D-R.I., and SkillsUSA RI Executive Director Josh Klemp presented Velino the award on March 30 at Cranston High School West, as part of Langevin’s Rhode Island Skilled Economy or “RISE” tour.
Velino was recognized for her contributions to career and technical education while leading her school’s SkillsUSA programs. SkillsUSA Rhode Island is a career and technical-student organization with 6,500 member students and teachers that partners with local companies to help build a skilled workforce for the state.
The national SkillsUSA program aims to improve training of high school and college students for technical, skilled and service occupations and will recognize one winner from those honored at the state level as the National Advisor of the Year at a conference in June. •
