CENTRAL FALLS – The city’s police, firefighters and municipal workers have reached an agreement with the bankrupt community’s state overseers on new union contracts.

The new contracts include a funded pension plan, no new layoffs, no outsourcing of services, raises over five years and reductions in public safety overtime, a Wednesday morning announcement by Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and Central Falls Receiver Robert G. Flanders Jr. said.

“It's always better when this can be done by agreement and labor worked with us every step of the way,” Flanders said in a statement. “These agreements represent a significant step in our efforts to transform Central Falls into a financially viable city while maintaining the essential services on which city residents depend. I want to thank all parties for negotiating in a spirit of cooperation and common purpose.”

The deal reached with around 30 clerks, dispatchers and public works employees covered by Local 1627 of Rhode Island Council 94, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees also included concessions on health care plans, hours of work, sick leave, time off, and raises, the union said in a statement.

“This contract represents the culmination of all the sacrifices made by the employees of Central Falls to help their community move toward financial recovery,” said Council 94 President J. Michael Downey in a statement.
