THE CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES has released star ratings for hospitals across the nation, and South County Hospital was the only Rhode Island hospital to receive five stars.

PROVIDENCE – South County Hospital was one of 102 hospitals nationwide to receive five stars in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating, the organization said this week.

The South Kingstown hospital ranks 100 out of 102 on CMS’ Hospital Compare website.

The CMS rating system is based on 64 quality indicators of comprehensive care, which are broken down into seven categories: mortality, safety of care, re-admission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. Hospitals with state-of-the-art technology, such as cancer care, are judged blind of these specialized units.

Once the data is collected CMS gathers the findings into five groups ranking hospitals from one to five stars.
