WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp. and IBM will invest $1.5 million in a new grant program to support technology innovations in community health centers nationwide.

The “Technology Solutions for Smarter Health” grants, administered in partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers, will encourage community health centers to adopt a more advanced technology infrastructure to help centers share health information with patients through secure electronic messaging and allow patients to view, download and transmit their health information online.

More than 9,000 health centers throughout the United States provide care for more than 22 million Americans, CVS and IBM said. Community-based health centers in rural and urban neighborhoods often serve as an affordable health care alternative for patients without access to a primary care provider.

“We know that community health centers are seeing an increase in the number of patients they care for as a result of changes in our health care system, which is why we are partnering to invest in innovative technology solutions that will give them additional ways to communicate with patients and provide them with easy access to their health information,” said Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.

The $1.5 million in funding for the Technology Solutions for Smarter Health program is in addition to CVS Caremark’s existing multimillion dollar partnership with the National Association of Community Health Centers, CVS said, which has awarded nearly 60 community health centers with “Innovations in Community Health” grants over the past two years to support initiatives focused on the treatment and management of chronic illnesses.
