CVS adds health screening to company plan, with incentive

Posted 3/19/13

BOSTON – CVS Caremark Corp. has instituted a policy that requires employees using the company’s health insurance plan to undergo a health screening by May 1 in order to avoid being charged an additional $50 per month for their coverage, according to the Boston Herald.

The newspaper reported that the company will pay for the screening, which will include weight, height, body fat, blood pressure, and glucose and fasting lipid levels, but will require that employees allow the test results be sent to a health services group that provides health management and benefit support programs to CVS.

The Herald quoted CVS spokesman Michael DeAngelis, who said the program was designed “to help our colleagues take more responsibility for improving their health and managing health-associated costs.”

Reached independently, DeAngelis said that “according to a National Business Group on Health survey, 79 percent of employers offered a health assessment in 2011 and 76 percent of those employers offered incentives for completion.”

He added that “consistent with the requirements of HIPAA and to maintain employee privacy, all personal health data from these screenings are collected and reviewed by a third-party administrator that supports the CVS Caremark Wellness Program, and this data is never shared with CVS Caremark.”
