WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp. has agreed to pay $975,000 in civil penalties, attorney fees and costs to California stemming from charges brought by the state over expired products remaining on shelves of CVS/pharmacy and Longs Drugs stores, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The retailer has denied doing anything wrong, but it has agreed to give customers at its stores in California who find an expired item a $2 coupon.
The state initiated the investigation in March 2008, based on consumer complaints, at which point the attorney general’s office sent people posing as customers to find items that were past their “sell by” dates.
